The Future of Sustain!

The UNM Campus Sustainability Forum has had its ups and downs over the years, but I think it is time to make some decisions about our future. For me the driving question is: what does the sustainability movement on campus need to move forward? How can a group like Sustain! best support the growth of a better world? For the sake of some organization in the responses and as a way to make a decision later, I will provide a multiple choice framework. Please preface your response with the one you feel best represents your ideas.

A: The sustainability movement needs a single group to lead the efforts on campus and speak with a unified voice.
B: UNM Sustain should host/cohost various events on campus to bring together people who care about various causes - but it should have no agenda of its own
C: Sustain should be like any other group, with a working of important social issues to bring to the attention of the community.
D: All we need is a calendar to let people know when the many other groups on campus are holding events.
E: I am proposing something entirely different.

definitely email dr. bruce milne - bmilne@sevilleta.unm.edu - i think he would be more than happy to create a link or section of the UNM SSP website to the activities of UNM Sustain and other sustainable engaged student organizations . . .

perhaps in the future focus on a peer education event - like have mini conference with the theme of sustainbility - keynote speaker and then break out session in the SUB upstairs . . . with a variety of speakers like 4 - 5 -- have it catered to showcase local and organic foods . . . it could be a saturday event from 10 am - 3 pm and students would rotate through ALL of the sessions - provide attendees with handouts that are resources relevant to the sustainable topics . . . get green donations and do a raffle to entice people to come and learn something new . . .

it might be useful to focus on a few key areas others or projects that we could like up with the community . ..

some ideas

As I am getting ready to graduate I wish you all luck in your
endeavors. The question about how UNM Sustain can really make an
impact on our community/future is actually quite simple to answer:
reach out to schools. The young are the key to the future. Maybe you
can work on taking some of your presentations into the local schools
and talk about the importance of sustainability in our future. Hey, it
might even help increase enrollment in UNM's program. As a teacher, I
see our future in the young minds that I teach because they are open to
new ideas. Just a thought.... Good luck!

Peace,
Tanya
